Musselburgh Grammar – 400th birthday Celebration Parade

The band were asked to take part in a parade on the 27th of March 2026 to celebrate the 400th birthday of Musselburgh Grammar School. The band were joined on the parade by members of the school, the Loretto pipe band and Pulse of the Place. Local primary school pupils lined the streets as we ll as many locals who came to cheer on the pupils and musicians. Details for the event are below from the East Lothian Courier.

A COMMUNITY parade on Friday will mark the 400th anniversary of Musselburgh Grammar School.

The event is part of the school’s celebrations for the historic milestone in 2026.

Jodie Hannan, headteacher, said: “It is both a privilege and honour to be headteacher of a school with such a proud and long history of serving Musselburgh.

“To commemorate our incredible milestone, I have planned a number of events both in and out of school in each month of 2026.”

Commemorations started in January and February by focusing on kindness, encouraging young people and staff to recognise and celebrate even the smallest act of kindness across school in its 400 Acts of Kindness campaign. Grange was the winning house.

One of Musselburgh Grammar’s head pupils, Libby Bain, also created a school badge to mark the “momentous year”, and Lewis Bisset, in the Nurture and Inclusion department, is working on a ‘Mural fur Mussy’.

This project is open to the whole school and is creating a visual tribute that celebrates the school’s past, present and future, and which will be installed on a wall in the town.

Ms Hannan said: “I know how much the Grammar means to the town, so March’s commemoration event is much bigger and puts us right at the heart of the community.

“What better way to showcase the Grammar and involve the whole community than a parade?

“Our whole school, all young people and staff, and a number of invited guests from community groups, will walk through the town centre on the morning of Friday, March 27, starting at 9.15am, and accompanied by both Loretto and Preston Lodge’s pipe bands

“Holding this event in March means that all of our S6, S5 and S4 leavers will be included in this celebration before they go on study leave in April and then leave school.”

Musselburgh Grammar’s associated primaries of Campie, Burgh, Stoneyhill, Loretto RC, Craighall and Whitecraig have been invited to join those in the parade along the route. All former pupils are invited to cheer on the parade from the pavements.

“We will begin at the Grammar’s front gates, turning into Inveresk Road, right at the Horseshoe Tavern, left onto Newbigging, left onto Musselburgh High Street, left onto Dalrymple Loan, with a final turn left onto Inveresk Road and back into the school grounds via the back gate,” explained Ms Hannan.

“Events such as this take a great a deal of planning, so I would like to thank Loretto and Preston Lodge schools for the loan of their pipe bands, members of the Grammar’s parent council for supporting with planning, volunteer marshals from the Rotary, Old Musselburgh Clubs and other community groups, and colleagues in Police Scotland, and Roads and Transport for their support of this milestone event.

“Thank you also to all alumni who have contacted the school – it has been lovely to hear your memories and stories about the Grammar.

All alumni and former staff can email 400alumni@musselburghgrammar.elcschool.org.uk to be added to the mailing list and kept informed of events across the year.
