Finlay started learning the chanter at the age of 11 at St Columbas School Kilmacolm.

In 2017 Finlay was appointed Pipe Major of the school band and led the band down 6th Avenue as part the Tartan Week Parade in New York. As well as playing with the school pipe band he also competed successfully with the Johnstone Grade 4 Pipe band, notable winning the world championships in 2016.

Finlay was also a member  of the National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland from 2013 to 2017, during which time he performed at various concerts and took part twice in the Avenches Tattoo.

Finlay started studying on the RCS Bmus Trad (piping) course in 2017 and is about to enter his fourth and final year. While in Glasgow, Finlay has been playing the the GSUOTC Pipes and drums who have successfully competed at the Army Piping and Drumming Championships as well as performing in Basel, Sydney and London. He recently re-joined the Johnstone grade 1 band and is looking forward to the season ahead.

Finlay is also a keen solo player and has had some success in the adult competitions in recent years, notably winning the March and Piobaireachd event at the Scottish Pipers Association annual competition.
